Correct assessment and recording of flowering is critical to optimise orchard operations whilst ensuring bee health and pollination efficiency. To help with this practice the South Australian Research & Development Institute (SARDI) and the ABA have released the following fact sheets and reporting tool.
How to assess flowering (SARDI)
Dr. Dane Thomas of SARDI has been researching the phenology of almonds and released the following fact sheets. These fact sheets provide a comprehensive overview of how and why recording the phenology stages of flowering and hull split are an important observation to make in your orchard. The Australian Almonds Flowering Tool is designed for long-term record keeping of flowering seasons. The tool reports flowering synchronisation by block, based on yearly inputs of data on up to three different observation points. The summary table can then be manipulated to include the desired years that you wish to average out. All tables can be exported as either a jpeg or png file. The image above shows an explanation of what is generated.
